Spiral Vortexer Micromixer Receives US Patent Issuance
Cambridge, MA – The DNA Medicine Institute (DMI) announced today that its spiral vortexer micromixer has been officially patented. Issued as US Patent No. 9,194,780 under the title “Microfluidic Passive Mixing Chip,” the patent protects a novel method for efficiently mixing large blood cells within a microfluidic environment.
Traditional microfluidic mixers often struggle with blood, as its larger cell size and limited diffusion make uniform mixing difficult. The spiral vortexer micromixer overcomes these challenges by applying multiple mixing forces to blood samples, ensuring rapid and thorough blending.
Developed with support from NASA, the technology has been successfully tested in zero-gravity conditions onboard parabolic flights, highlighting its potential for advanced space-based biomedical applications.
