DMI Selected as Finalist for $2.25 Million Nokia Sensing XCHALLENGE
Cambridge, October 20, 2014 — DNA Medicine Institute (DMI), a multidisciplinary team of biotechnology innovators, engineers, and computer scientists led by Dr. Eugene Chan, has been selected as a finalist in the prestigious Nokia Sensing XCHALLENGE — a global competition designed to accelerate game-changing sensing technologies for personal and remote medical diagnostics. DMI is one of just 11 finalist teams from four countries, competing for a share of the $2.25M prize purse.
The final round of the competition features a public online voting campaign, which will contribute 10% of each team’s score, with the remaining 90% determined by a panel of distinguished experts across digital health and medical technology. Voting for the finalist teams and their innovations runs from October 21 through October 30 at:

DMI entered its breakthrough rHEALTH® diagnostic platform, developed through extensive support from NASA and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The rHEALTH device can deliver hundreds of laboratory-grade results from a single drop of blood while operating in a compact, portable form factor. The platform can also conduct continuous vital sign monitoring over multiple days. In partnership with NASA, rHEALTH has been successfully evaluated in lunar-analog and zero-gravity flight environments, underscoring its readiness for deep-space and autonomous medical use.
Team DMI was also recently named a finalist in the $10M Qualcomm Tricorder XPRIZE, further validating its leadership in miniaturized, next-generation diagnostics.
“The mission of the rHEALTH technology is to democratize biomedical diagnostics,” said Dr. Chan. “We designed it to span the full range of diagnostic test classes and make them universally accessible — by anyone, anywhere. Competing as a finalist in the Nokia Sensing XCHALLENGE marks an exciting milestone in bringing that vision to reality.”
Competing teams are eligible for a $525,000 Grand Prize, as well as up to five Distinguished Awards valued at $120,000 each. Winners will be selected based on accuracy, consistency, user experience, technical innovation, real-world applicability, and overall market impact. Award results will be announced November 10, 2014.
